Young part-time restaurant workers, flexibility and professional identity

The restaurant sector is a growing sector, employing many young people and workers from foreign backgrounds. It sums up many of the characteristics of the post-Fordist labour market: atypical employment relationships are remarkably common and their risks are accumulated by the worker. The work is busy and requires flexibility and emotional skills to manage customer encounters. This research project uses a wide range of interview data to investigate the work ethics and financial coping of young restaurant workers in precarious and fluctuating employment relationships. The research is being carried out in collaboration with the Department of Sociology at the University of Helsinki.
