Education, work and transitions

Issues related to education and work, as well as transitions from adolescence to adulthood, are central themes in the research conducted by the Finnish Youth Research Society. We study educational transitions and choices, the significance of work, and the processes of becoming an adult and life course. The goal of research examining education, working life, and transitions is to produce comprehensive information on young people’s experiences and the societal factors that shape their educational paths and work experiences amid a changing labor market.

The thematic area is coordinated by Academy Research Fellow Lotta Haikkola.

Current research

Self-made futures (DIYFuture)

Project examines young people’s strategies for responding to the uncertainty in the intersection of welfare state retrenchment and asset economy and young people’s changing interpretations of individual and collective responsibility.

Youth Barometer

The annual Youth Barometer measures the values and attitudes of young people in Finland. Education and work are its core themes.

Youth in time – a qualitative longitudinal study

The project follows the life course of young people born at the turn of the millennium over a long period of at least 10 years.
