Themes related to participation and democracy have been a central part of the Finnish Youth Research Society’s research activities throughout the 2000s. We study the empowerment of young people and young adults, both at local community level and as part of wider collectives. Participation and democracy research is also strongly concerned with experientialism, i.e. how and to what extent young people experience belonging to different communities.
Research activities in the Finnish Youth Research Society highlight both the opportunities for young people of different backgrounds to participate in decision-making about themselves and the various barriers to participation.
